CHILDREN’S CHRISTIAN
EDUCATION
CURRICULUM: PreK-kindergarten through middle
school is using the Witness Curriculum, published by Augsburg
Fortress.
What
is Witness? Through
words and actions, Christians point to what God has done, and share
with others the love they have received from God.
The Witness curriculum
equips children and youth to learn from the Bible and live the good
news.

Our Children in Worship,
It’s all good.
An enthusiastic sub-committee of the Sunday School
Council and Worship Committee has been meeting over the summer to
plan ways in which we can meaningfully involve our children in
Sunday morning worship services. It is our desire that we:
-
Explain the meaning and symbolism of elements of
the worship service to our children
-
Provide teaching and coaching so our youth can
participate in age-appropriate elements of the worship service
-
Schedule regular participation of the youth in our
services so that it becomes the norm, not the exception It is our
hope that by meaningfully involving our children in worship, it
will promote their spiritual formation, strengthen the bond
between our children and church as they grow, and will allow them
to more fully participate in the worship experience. Ultimately,
their presence will be part of joyfully ascribing praise and honor
and glory and power to God.
What can you expect? In addition to a regular
Sunday school curriculum for our children, we are planning special
Sunday school classes led by “visiting teachers”. This will
begin on Sunday, October 19th and will continue on other Sundays as
yet be scheduled. Each Sunday school class will cover different
topics, suitable for their age.
Our first or second-graders can look forward to
meeting an usher, being taken on a tour of the sanctuary and
chancel, reviewing the roll of the ushers and the importance of
hospitality in our worship services. They will be
participating as Jr. Ushers during the year.
Third, fourth and fifth-graders can look forward to
reviewing the order of the worship service with the pastor;
exploring the sacrament of Communion; and focusing on the role of
the scripture lessons in worship. They will be providing the
scripture lessons during some of the worship services and will
assist with the preparation of communion during the year.
Sixth, seventh and eighth-graders will also cover
the order of worship with a pastor and will spend time exploring the
importance and different types of prayer. They will meet with a
Deacon to find out how the church body supports one another through
prayer. These kids will participate by leading prayers in some of
the worship services.
We’re excited to move forward with this plan and
look for your support. If you have any good ideas, would like
to help, or if this sparks any questions, please talk to a member of
the Sunday School Council or Sid McCollum. We pray that God
will bless our efforts to teach our children about Him and some of
the ways we worship and serve Him in our PCIS community.

SENIOR HIGH CLASS
Please see the Newsletters
for information on the current class.
SENIOR
HIGH YOUTH GROUP
Who: A group
of 9th through 12th graders, members of PCIS
and other friends, led by energetic Christian leaders who haven’t
forgotten what it’s like to be a teenager.
When: We meet
most Sunday evenings at 7:00.
Where: At the
church, upstairs in the Chapel. Occasionally, offsite outings are
planned.
What:
Fun, fellowship, Christian learning, and service. Our main focus
has been our annual summer mission trip, which has included
traveling to Tennessee, Michigan, North Carolina, and Georgia to
work with underprivileged individuals and communities, both in rural
and urban settings. Commented one youth participant: “I thought I
was going down there to give something to these people, but I really
gained much more from them.”
Closer to home during the
rest of the year, we are involved in other local projects, such as
helping out at the Salvation Army dinner.
How: Not only
do the youth select their annual mission project each year, but they
also work hard to earn the funds required for registration fees,
travel, and meals along the way. Our major fundraiser is a spring
Auction at the church. Members of our congregation, as well as
businesses in the community, have been very generous in offering
goods and services that we auction off during a fun-filled
evening—there are always a lot of laughs as members compete with
each other for a peach-blueberry pie or a week at a vacation home!
Why: To make
friends, to be a part of something worthwhile, and to grow in faith
as we grow into Christian adults.

SMALL GROUP MINISTRY
“Small Groups” at
PCIS are just that—several members who gather regularly to grow in
faith while enjoying the fellowship of one another. All of our
small groups were formed by members who had a desire to build a
group around a particular theme, set a meeting schedule, and got the
ball rolling. If you don’t find one of these small groups to meet
your needs, why not start a new one?
Men’s Fellowship Breakfast:
Meets at 6:30 a.m. each Wednesday at the Church. We get
start off each session with good food and conversation, and often
discuss how we can apply our faith in our daily lives. Following
prayer for each other and for others in the congregation as well as
the larger community, we leave to begin our other responsibilities
of the day with strengthened faith. We are currently studying
prayer and Matthew.
Women’s Bible Study: We meet most Wednesday mornings
at 9:30 for Bible study, great fellowship, coffee and a snack.
Child care is provided for a small fee. Join us as we read and
study scripture with friends. We welcome women of all ages—in fact,
many members find the interaction between generations to be one of
this group’s major attractions! We are currently studying
the Gospel of John.
Explorers: You are welcome to join us. We meet Friday
evenings at 7:30 at participants’ homes We start out with dessert
and coffee, fellowship time, move into a study/discussion mode,
usually taking on an average of four books annually. We are
currently studying Philip Yancey's book, Reaching For the
Invisible God.
Occasionally
outings are planned: theater, Sunday brunch, concerts, dinner out.
A couple of members share their thoughts on this group: “We’ve
tackled some pretty tough issues dealing with how we grow as
Christians. There is plenty of life experience behind us to share
among the group…” “It supplements Sunday worship and facilitates
our growth in Christian faith and service.”

dinner cruise on the Sudbury River!
Mom's Bible Study: The group meets Sunday evenings at
7:30 p.m. We are studying a six-week topical Bible study
called Finding Joy in All You Are. Our group includes moms of teenagers as
well as toddlers! Please join us as we discuss how God's help
and his Holy Spirit can help us on this journey of motherhood - and
trade some pretty hilarious anecdotes!
The Artists' Group meets on Mondays from 7:00-9:00 P.M.
Bring your own art project and materials, and your creativity.
All are welcome to join. Questions? Contact Cindy Faulkner.
